about

The Chimes Of Freedom were an L.A. club band that played in and around Hollywood, California from 1987-89. Founded by Washington State songwriters Jeff Sherman and Susan Logg, the band also featured Glendale, California guitarist/vocalist Hamilton Metz and drummer Denise Fraser. Washington-born drummer (and long-time friend) Paul Black was brought in to record on two tracks of their only album, “It's Never Too Late.” Live performances were augmented by bassist Jane Erskine and drummer Randy Nichols when touring obligations prohibited Fraser from playing. Both Logg and Black went on to become members in Sherman's activist alter-ego project Jeff Joad & The Joads.

Borrowing the title of a famous Bob Dylan song for their band name, the band was conceived by Sherman to be a latter-day version of '60s Folk-Rock bands like The Byrds (and indeed they credibly covered several of The Byrds songs when playing live). Their music focused primarily on strong vocal melodies and tight three-part harmonies featuring the extraordinary voice of Ms. Logg. Also heavily featured was Sherman's jangling Roger McGuinn-esque Rickenbacker 12-string guitar playing.

In 1987 there was some interest expressed by Chappell Music in Jeff Sherman's songwriting that, coupled with an interest in the band by CBS Records sub-label WTC Records, motivated Sherman to form a vehicle for his songwriting. The career move of his long-time friend songwriter Sue Logg to the L.A. area seemed to indicate that the time was right for a partnership. Enlisting his new friend guitarist Hamilton Metz (with whom he had played in the first L.A. iteration of Alan Rench & The ViceGrips), Sherman set out to find a drummer and a bass player to complete the unit. No available bass player with the requisite skills was found at first, so Jeff himself played bass on their only studio recording.

"I always wanted to release this album but got caught up in other things. Now with digital downloads looking like the future of popular music, I finally can! At the very least, check out Sue's incredible songwriting and her stellar voice . . .she’s one in a million. And I’m so lucky I got to work with her on at least one “official” album. Get out your tie-dyes folks and groove to a little piece of the ‘60s. . .because "It's Never Too Late."

This site is for Jeff's other music.

"His music comes to him from The Stream. When he sits down to play, he casts his line. Sometimes he has no preconcieved idea as to what he might find. He only knows the ideas will come to him-from somewhere.

As he composes, what he feels is The River of Life as it washes over him."
